Earlier this year, my children received two wonderful books for their birthdays from Wonderbly. They are titled: ‘The little girl who lost her name‘, and ‘The little boy who lost his name‘. This summer they received another two wonderful books from the same brand titled: ‘Kingdom of You’. These personalised books made their wishes come true!
‘Kingdom of You‘ is an amazing story that has been personalised with characters that look almost exactly the same as my son and my daughter. On the first page there’s a personalised dedication and on the second page the story begins. The character has had enough of being told what he/she needs to do. And all of a sudden a Genie appears promising to grant three wishes. So my children wished to become the queen and the king of their own kingdoms and for their favourite things to surround them. They got princesses, dinosaurs and their favourite food: Fruits! Lots of fruits! But as the Genie warned, one should choose his/her wishes wisely. A Fruit monster appears and the story continues with an exciting plot.
The kids got so involved and listened to the story from the beginning till the very end. After the Genie appeared the first time we read the story, I paused and asked: what would you ask for if a Genie appeared and granted you three wishes? My son replied:
Wish number 1: I want lots of chocolates and sweets!
Wish number 2: I want to travel the world!
Wish number 3: I want another Genie!!!
We really love the illustrations and all the details on every page of this book. It makes every scene look so real! The scene of their rooms is hilarious. Toys, books, clothes, bags, hats, rain boots, that banana peel and even those drawings hanging on the wall. All these make a real reflection of a messy room that my kids sometimes have when they refuse to tidy up.. well, a very messy room!
The pictures of their own kingdoms is another great creation. My kids loved seeing their names written everywhere around their own kingdoms. Their ‘Palaces’ full of gifts would be a dream of every child in the world! Coins with their pictures printed on them?? Just wow!
Kingdom of You did not end for us there. It was the beginning of lots of discussion about wishes one can ask for, about appreciating what we have and about how we can get this story into life. We got inspired by this book and decided to recreate the ‘Fruit Monster’. To make it real!
And we paired it with a delicious vanilla yoghurt dip that the kids really enjoyed!
- 1 watermelon
- Variety of fruits
- 1 cup plain greek yoghurt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp honey
- Cut the watermelon with a sharp knife to make the shape of a monster's head.
- Arrange the rest of fruit around the watermelon in a way to form the body of the monster.
- Cut out different fruits using cookie cutters and serve with vanilla yoghurt dip.
- To make the dip, simply mix yoghurt with vanilla extract and honey and serve.
- Surprise you child with your amazing creation!
Creating your own fruit monster is very easy. All you need is a bit of imagination, different fruits and a sharp knife to cut out different shapes to create it. I used a watermelon to recreate the monster in the story, but other fruits could work too.
To make a fruit platter, we used cookie cutters to cut out different shapes out of fruits. And served the fruits on a large plate along with the yoghurt dip.
While I was working with the watermelon to recreate the fruit monster, my son decided to draw his own fruit monster so I thought I would share this picture with you as well!
